DCA launches new global Christmas Experience Policy to support safe and joyful festive conduct

The Department of Christmas Affairs (DCA) has officially launched its Christmas Guidelines, establishing a clear and consistent set of festive expectations for those celebrating Christmas around the world.

The guidelines — available from our Policy Page — outline practical direction for decorations, music, gifts, office celebrations, Santa hats, crackers, calendars, candy canes, and other seasonal items.

Designed to promote safety, respect and good humour, the policy helps global public sector organisations celebrate responsibly while reducing the types of festive incidents that have previously caused disruption, confusion, or diplomatic awkwardness.

The Secretary of the DCA said the new guidelines were created in response to common issues observed across multiple countries during past Christmas seasons.

“We regularly see decorations blocking exits, Christmas trees balanced in unsafe places, and staff using candy canes in ways that are frankly not what they were designed for,” the spokesperson said.

“The guidelines make it clear: enjoy your music, wear your Santa hat, exchange gifts — but do it safely, do it respectfully, and please avoid hanging mistletoe in any international government building. We cannot stress that last point enough.”
